Breaking down container roadblocks at DockerCon 2018

The simplified containerization techniques Docker Inc. introduced to enterprise computing has been a driving force behind the cloud-native transformation that continues to sweep the industry. As the long list of container benefits are realized by businesses and the market continues to surge, how does Docker plan to monetize its offerings amidst the growing competition from other open-source players?

Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at DockerCon 2018, currently underway in San Francisco with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

The market for application containers swelled to an estimated $1.2 billion this year and is expected to reach nearly $5 billion by 2023. Rapidly expanding enterprise needs in application modernization and improvement of core business competencies, such as resource utilization in information technology departments, and optimized process agility account for containers’ increased demand. Despite some concerns around security and a talent gap that could prolong the technology’s learning curve, container use is expected to climb with these fast-growing application processing needs and the emerging demand for machine learning tools.

While Docker has been a leader in the container market since helping to establish its popularity through its own widely used tools, the company has faced challenges in monetizing offerings to the developer community. Faced with competition from companies like Red Hat Inc. and Amazon Web Services Inc. that include their own container technology within a convenient bundle of cloud compute offerings, Docker has struggled to gain a foothold through an open-source model, even with its acclaimed services.

This dilemma became Docker’s catalyst for change when the company raised $75 million in funding from investors last year. The influx was put toward the sales and marketing of Docker Enterprise Edition, a subscription service that offers full application lifecycle support that includes security, orchestration and container management on a variety of popular platforms.

“I’m very confident that Docker EE is one of the most competitive enterprise container platforms in the cloud-native market,” said Charlie Dai, principal analyst at Forrester Research Inc. Docker will continue to offer its Basic version in addition to the Standard and Advanced versions of its containerization service.

The move is a positive step toward Docker further capitalizing on growth in the application container market. Whether the strategy will prove out and where Docker will go next will all be explored at this year’s DockerCon 2018.

Keynote speakers at DockerCon 2018 include Alex Iankoulski, principal software article at Baker Hughes, a GE Company; Arjuna Rivera, Infrastructure and International (I2) Labs senior manager and principal researcher at Lockheed Martin; Justin Cormack, software engineer at Docker; Kinnary Jangla, engineering manager at Pinterest; Liz Rice, technology evangelist at Aqua Security; Michele Leroux Bustamante, co-founder and chief information officer at Solliance; Peter Ngai, senior staff software architect at GE Digital; Robert Tercek, author; Steve Singh, chairman and chief executive officer of Docker; Till Schenk, IT infrastructure architect at Robert Bosch GmbH; and Tim Hockin, principal software engineer at Google.
