Amazon debuts compact new Fire TV device and Alexa-powered remote

Hot on the heels of unveiling more than a dozen voice-controlled devices at an event in Seattle, Amazon.com Inc. has followed up with two more.

The company today introduced a compact new addition to its Fire TV line of video streaming systems and an accompanying remote with a built-in microphone. Both are designed to work with Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant, which the company is making available in more form factors amid growing competition from services such as Google Assistant.

The Fire TV Stick 4K is a small, rectangular dongle that can be plugged into an HDMI port in a display to stream video from tens of thousands of channels. It will be available for $50, a 25 percent price increase over the previous model, and it features a number of significant upgrades.

Amazon said that the Fire TV Stick 4K sports an internally developed antenna backed by a 1.7-gigahertz processor with four cores. That’s a big improvement over the 1.5-gigahertz chip in the previous model and the more recently launched Fire TV Cube, which in practice should translate into smoother streaming.

The image quality is better, too. Fire TV Stick 4K ups the previous model’s maximum 1080p resolution with support for 4K Ultra HD, the Dolby Vision imaging process technology and three different versions of the HDR format. This is a standard that has been implemented by TV makers in recent years to help fine-tune displays’ brightness levels for increased realism.

Over on the software side, Amazon has extended the device’s voice control support to more than a half-dozen additional third-party services, including HBO Now, Sony Crackle and AMC. Users can interact with the Fire TV Stick 4K via a nearby Echo smart speaker or by using the new Alexa Voice Remote that the company introduced as well.

On top of having a built-in speaker, the $20 gadget provides the ability to control a wide range of devices besides Fire TV systems. That includes sound bar speakers, cable boxes, AV equipment and other hardware that supports infrared-based remote control technology. Topping it all off are dedicated dedicated power, volume and mute buttons.

The Fire TV Stick 4K and the Alexa Voice Remote are available for preorder immediately, with shipping set to start on Oct. 31.
