Skype Launches Video Calls on the iPhone, Competes with Apple’s Facetime

Skype has expanded its video call offerings from PC and Mac to the iPhone as well. You can now talk to your Skype contacts: your boss, clients, family or even if you simply want to show off what you got for Christmas to your friends, from virtually anywhere using your mobile phone.

The Skype call for iPhone features Skype-to-Skype voice and video call over 3G and Wifi. You can also invite PC and Mac users to video call, as well as talk to them face to face or show them your view using your phone’s front and rear cameras.

“The new app is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above,” Skype notes  in its blog. “You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad. Calls can be made between devices using the new Skype for iPhone app and desktops including Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone.”

Skype added several other exciting product updates this year. It recently launched an Android app and partnered with Japan’s second largest telecom company to extend the reach of Skype experience, as well as team with Facebook to integrate Skype calls to the largest social media network.

An update from Skype’s recent downtime, the company wipes the dirt on Window’s bug. Skype for Windows version 5.0.0152 kept the messages from being properly processed on the Skype servers which caused an overload that led to a operation crash. Although those running the latest version of Skype, version 5.0.0.156, as well as Skype for Mac, Skype for iPhone, and Skype on your TV, and Skype Connect or Skype Manager for enterprises were not affected, 50% percent of Skype users uses the defective version causing 40% of those clients to crash.
