IBM unveiled a host of new enterprise solutions and improvements to existing products at this week’s IBM Edge 2013 conference. Among the announcements are several additions to the company’s storage portfolio.

Big Blue kicks things off by announcing the general availability of FlashSystem, a family of all-flash appliances built from the ground up to digest hot data. The company also introduced support for 4TB drives to its Storwize V7000 and XIV disk storage systems, unveiled a new tape solution, and released an update for its Easy Tier software, which automatically assigns data to disk or flash based on performance and capacity requirements. The new version caches hot data to the EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O Drawer on IBM Power Systems.

These announcements coincided with the debut of Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center, a “new and intuitive management dashboard” that eliminates much of the complexity associated with enterprise backup. The software, which IBM says can support thousands of backups across multiple sites, leverages a combination of analytics, automation and visualization technologies to monitor systems with browser-enabled devices and streamline troubleshooting.

Also new to IBM’s lineup are nine new Power Systems offerings, each of which are optimized for both cloud and Big Data environments. Five of the appliances are tailored for companies in the healthcare and retail industry. These systems are joined by a set of entry-level technical computing solutions for research-centric industries such as aerospace and life sciences, and a number of general-purpose software solutions including a cloud security framework and applications that simplify the deployment of social business and mobile devices on IBM infrastructure.

“Cloud computing and Big Data analytics are playing key roles in helping organizations lower operating expenses, improve efficiencies, and increase productivity,” commented Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president at IBM’s Systems & Technology Group. “But they’re also enabling greater and faster access to business insights, which is fundamentally transforming the ways in which organizations, public and private, are interacting with, learning from, and supporting their customers.”
