Apple Watch app for pet monitoring: Newest in smart home tech

This week’s Smart Living roundup features a new way to spy on pets, a European smart hub’s arrival in the U.S., a new water sensor and alarm, and a helmet that captures all your precious moments.

Petcube Camera

Apple-watch-oneWhat started as a Kickstarter project is now a reality, appealing to pet owners around the country. Petcube Camera is a pet monitoring system with a 138-degree, wide-angle camera that is capable of streaming HD 720p video right to your mobile device. It connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, has two-way audio streaming because of its built-in speaker and microphone, comes with a non-slip bottom and features a built-in pet-safe 5mW 3R-class laser so you can play with your pet even when you’re away.

You can use your Android or iOS device, and even your Apple Watch, to check on your pet. And if you think your pet is cute enough, you can set the Petcube stream to share with the public so others can join the fun. Petcube has an entire community of users sharing cat videos in the “Explore” section of its app – it’s like the early days of YouTube all over again.

You can purchase the Petcube Camera for $199, and it comes with a one-year warranty and 30-day money back guarantee.

Fibaro Home Center 2 arrives in the U.S.

Fibaro Group’s Home Center 2 home automation hub has finally arrived in the U.S. The device is based on the Z-Wave wireless technology that allows homeowners to monitor and control connected devices in their homes using a computer or the app on their mobile device so they can monitor and control devices even when out of the country.

The Fibaro Home Center 2 works with the company’s Motion and Flood Sensors, as well as popular home automation devices, such as smart thermostats from Nest, Trane, Honeywell, RCS, 2GIG; Internet Protocol (IP) cameras from D-Link, Gen IV, Hikvision, Geo, Speco, and Axis; Linear garage door openers; Philips Hue lighting; DSC alarms; and an array of products and systems from other leading home technology providers.

D-Link’s new Water Sensor and Siren

Wi-Fi Water SensorD-Link Corp. announced the availability of its Wi-Fi Water Sensor and Wi-Fi Siren. The Wi-Fi Water Sensor is a device that connects to your home’s network to detect a water leak before things get messy. It beeps to alert you if a leak has been detected, and it pairs with your smartphone using the mydlink Home app so you can monitor and receive notifications regarding the leak. It also comes with a sensor cable that allows you to monitor hard-to-reach areas.

As for the Wi-Fi Siren, it’s a device that pairs with other D-Link home automation devices and blasts off an alarm when something unforeseen has been detected, such as water leak. The Water Sensor costs $59.00, while the Siren costs $49.99 in D-Link’s own online store.

iFamCare Helmet camera

It’s not what you think. The iFamCare Helmet does not mount on your helmet. It is a home monitoring system that is designed to look like a small helmet. It features a camera with 360-degree vertical coverage and 70-degree horizontal coverage, laser so you can play with your pets, two-way speakers and 1080p video quality. Also, videos can be saved on a mountable microSD card, and it connects to the Internet using your home network or via 3G or 4G connectivity.

But the Helmet isn’t just for visual monitoring, as it has air sensors that test the quality of the air in the room, allows you to share photos and videos with your friends, and delivers notifications to your smartphone via the iFamCare mobile app when it detects sounds and motion.

The Helmet is still being funded on Indiegogo and has 18 more days to go, but it has already surpassed its funding goal. The company intends to ship the device by November 2015.
