Sony cuts PS4 price in North America ahead of the holiday shopping season

The holiday season is fast approaching, and that means it is time for the big console makers to start slashing prices in preparation for the frenzied buying spree that keeps the lights on for at least a few more months. Last year the holiday season saw a 17 percent bump in console sales, and companies like Microsoft and Sony Corp are likely hoping for a repeat this year.

Microsoft already announced a series of 1TB Xbox One bundles for $399, and now Sony is following suit by cutting PlayStation 4 prices by up to $50, depending on which game you want bundled with it.

Both the UNCHARTED: The Nathan Drake Collection and the standard Star Wars Battlefront PS4 bundles will now be $349.99 USD ($449.99 CAD). The Limited Edition Call of Duty: Black Ops III did not get quite as much of a price cut. It will be dropping to $429.99 USD ($499.99 CAD), saving consumers $30 off the previous price.

“Our goal at PlayStation has always been to offer the best place to play at a compelling value to gamers,” SCEA CEO Shawn Layden said in a statement. “We’re continuing to deliver on that commitment with this new price for PS4, making the console even more accessible to a broader audience this holiday. With highly anticipated games like Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Star Wars Battlefront launching soon and blockbuster exclusives like UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End on the horizon, there has never been a better time to join the PS4 community.”

The new PlayStation 4 prices will go into effect on Friday, October 9, and this means it is only a matter of time before Sony announces something like a PlayStation 4 Slim that will allow it to jack the price back up again for the next round of sales.
