Currently available for download in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, Apple’s new News app – introduced alongside iOS 9 – lets you keep abreast of news articles from your favorite publications in one app.
If you are lucky enough to reside in one of the three initial countries to get the News app, you’ll find it loaded with your iOS 9 upgrade by default.
When you open the News app for the first time, you’ll see a list of select media outlets you can add to your news feed. Apple has added five media outlets by default (visible along the top of the screen); however, you can change these after the initial setup if you’d like.
The app requires that you pick three additional news sources during setup. To do this, scroll down and tap on the thumbnails of three publications you’d like to see news stories from and the select Continue.
If you’d like “the best stories” delivered to your inbox, select Sign Me Up or select Not Now to skip this step.
For You is the main section of the News app and shows news highlights from the publications you selected. Scroll vertically to view highlights and tap to open and read an item.
While reading an article, swipe left or right to go back to the previous article or on to the next article. You can ‘teach’ the News app what type of news stories you like by tapping the heart icon – the News app will now surface more of the same stories. You can also ‘teach’ it what you don’t like by double-tapping the heart icon.
If you don’t have time to finish an article, tap the bookmark icon to save it for later.
The tabs at the bottom of the News app lets you view a grid of publications and explore, search, and view your saved articles.
Tap on Favorites to access articles from a specific publication and remove those default publications Apple added.
Tap on Explore to see suggested publications and topics and add them to your news feed. Looking for a specific publication? Tap on Search to see if it’s available in the News app.
The News app lets you sync your news feed across all you iOS 9 devices; however, this does not happen by default. To set this up, go to Settings > tap on iCloud > toggle News On. You’ll have to do this on each individual iOS 9 device for your News app content to sync.
