iOS 10 3D Touch shortcuts: Prioritize app downloads, respond to messages, more
Apple introduced 3D Touch with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in September. Since then various app developers have included the 3D Touch functionality into their software and there are a variety of cool things you can do with 3D Touch.
With the launch of the latest operating system – iOS 10 – iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users will soon be able to enjoy even more 3D Touch features.
iOS 10 is currently only available in beta 1 for developers, so to be able to access the new 3D Touch features you will need to download the beta 1 or enroll for the public beta due out in July. Alternatively, you can avoid any teething issues with the operating system and wait for the official release in September.
As developers spend more time with the iOS 10 beta, more ‘hidden’ features get discovered. The latest 3D Touch functionality to be identified is the ability to prioritize app downloads. We look at this 3D Touch gestures as well as the others that iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can expect.
Prioritize downloads of specific apps
The latest 3D Touch-enabled shortcut to be identified is the ability to prioritize the download of a specific app when doing a bulk download. In previous versions of iOS, users had to pause each app individually, leaving only the one app to complete its download and installation.
Now in iOS 10, if you have more than one app downloading on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, you can 3D Touch the specific app that you want to prioritize and select the shortcut – Prioritize Download. This will temporarily pause the installation of the other apps while the priority app completes its download.
Pause or cancel app downloads
In iOS 10 you will be able to manage apps that are downloading by pausing or canceling the download.
When you 3D Touch the icon of the app, a drop-down list will include Pause Download, Cancel Download as well as a Share option. If you tap Pause Download, that option will be replaced with Resume Download. Tap the Share option and the iOS share sheet will appear and you will be able to share the pending app.
Multiple 3D Touch shortcuts for the Control Center
The Control Center on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus also gets 3D Touch gestures in iOS 10. You can control the light intensity of the Flashlight, set pre-set intervals on the Timer, and copy the most recent calculation from the Calculator. You can also 3D Touch the Camera and quickly get access to different camera modes, and customize your chat bubbles in Messages.
Easily share apps with friends
Sharing apps with friends has never been easier with 3D Touch in iOS 10. Simply press the icon of the app that you want to share > select the Share shortcut > share the app using the iOS share sheet.
Tip: Regardless of an app having other 3D shortcuts, the Share shortcut will appear for all apps on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus.
3D Touch Peek and Pop capabilities
In iOS 10, users will now be able to view photos, videos and respond to incoming messages without leaving the Lock screen with the new 3D Touch Peek and Pop capabilities.
You will also be able to clear all notifications in the Notification Center with a single 3D Touch gesture. Simply deep press the X and all notifications will be cleared.
Manage folders with 3D Touch
Hard press any folder on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus and you will be presented with a 3D Touch menu in iOS 10. Options include the ability to quickly rename the folder with the Rename shortcut, as well as a list of outstanding notifications for each app in the folder.
Tip: Tap on any of the outstanding notifications and the relevant app will automatically launch.
