With every day the movement to open-source platforms grows larger. This means more collaboration and more innovation but where does that take place? Hortonworks, Inc. helps to provide a solution and build a new community.
Mark Herring, VP of Developer Evangelism and Community at Hortonworks, talked with George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), host of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Hadoop Summit 2016 about the Hortonworks community.
Hortonworks is working hard to create and establish a strong community. One of the biggest attributes of an open-source platform is the access it provides. With that access comes limitless knowledge in the form of users. Hortonworks has even created a community board to “allow better collaboration and creation,” said Herring.
Users are able to look at problem from a variety of perspectives ranging from the Spark level to tablet application. Developers are able to ask other developers for insight on issues and effectively create solutions and advancements that haven’t been thought of.
By creating so much access, Hotwonworks hopes to “democratize some of the knowledge,” according to Herring. Questions can be posed to the community at large, and an array of solutions can be given and chosen. Everyone from deep data scientists to high-level Hadoop developers can join in the discussion of innovative solutions mining.
As technology moves toward a more expansive Internet of Things a wealth of information is generated. Having features like a sandbox will allow programmers and developers to process and manipulate that information more effectively on the platfrom.
Open source is the way to go, and Hortonworks makes sure each new developer can be a part of an ecosystem dedicated to collaboration, Herring concluded.
