VMware’s Cloud Foundry at OSCON – Platforms are Still New

VMware is not perceived as an open source provider. But the company’s Cloud Foundry is a bit different. It’s platform technology is available across multiple programming languages. It’s available as a service and an open source software.

I caught up with Cloud Foundry’s Dave McCrory at OSCON today and asked what he is hearing from attendees.

He said a few things. People want to know if Cloud Foundry is really open-source. They want to know the difference between platform and infrastructure as a services technology. Many also come from big companies. They are looking at how they can serve developers.

Services Angle

You’d think that people at OSCON would be on the leading edge but the reality is that services for IT and software development are still new concepts to a lot of people. But these are early days. People are still trying to understand how platforms integrate into the enterprise. We expect that we will see a lot of efforts to educate people in the months ahead, especially at VMworld, where McCrory sees enterprise architects as the most eager group of people interested in the platform.
