RIM Gets Hold of Cellmania to Boost App and Ad Distribution

Research in Motion (RIM) might be the leading smart phone manufacturer in North America, but it also recognizes the apparent fact that they are not the best at everything when it comes to smart phones. The scope of BlackBerry applications is not getting as much interest from smart phone users, compared to Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market.

To enhance the capacity of their applications, RIM purchased Cellmania, a software infrastructure company that runs on  Orange and Sprint. Cellmania has agreed to merge with RIM, and proudly announced the formality Tuesday afternoon, on it’s homepage. From Cellmania:

“Our team has joined RIM’s global organization and will continue to bring our expertise in Application Storefront development to the BlackBerry Platforms. The Cellmania team will continue to support our client base and would like to thank out customers and partners for their support.”

The financial terms on this settlement was not disclosed.

RIM is serious in expanding an important area of their BlackBerry App World  and is now ready set off their way to getting in a real competition with Google and Apple. If RIM is looking to compte through ad distribution as well, the BlackBerry’s app store options will be an important focus.  Launching the new BlackBerry Torch device predicates accompanying upgrades by RIM.
