Box today announced a partnership with LG along with new features for its Android app. As part of the new partnership, users who log into Box for Android on any LG phone running Android 2.1 or higher between now and March 31 2012 will get 50 GBs of free storage space. The offer is good for both new and existing Box users.
This offering follows Box’s 50 GB offering for iOS uses earlier this year. Box promises it will offer this 50 GB promotion to uses of other Android devices in the future.
The new features of the Android app include:
Box already has partnerships with Samsung and Motorola, two of the other largest Android device makers. Mobile is a big part of Box’s strategy and 77% of Box users use the service on more than one device.
LG isn’t the biggest Android vendor, but it’s moving ahead and embracing the enterprise market. Last month it announced a partnership with VMware, offering phones with VMware Horizon Mobile platform pre-installed.
Box is also a VMware partner, using Horizon App Manager to facilitate its Active Directory integration.
We’ve been seeing an alternative ecosystem emerge around cloud, mobile and social. Software companies like Box, VMware and Salesforce.com are at the center of it, along with hardware companies like LG, Motorola and Dell. Software companies want to break-out from Microsoft’s shadow, and hardware companies are trying to differentiate commoditized products in the age of Apple. It’s really interesting to see competitors like Jive, Salesforce.com and Yammer in the same room at an event like BoxWorld, and though the companies aren’t directly cooperating with each other they all have a few common goals and common partnerships. Keep an eye on this “cloud mafia” in coming months as members drop in and out of the clique and alliances yield new products and services.
