Amazon.com Appears to Be Down [Updated]

It’s not just you.

Right now, Amazon.com is unavailable in the United States and for me. Reports are that the service (the web page at least) seems to be unavailable for numerous people and only sporadically available for others. The first report of the outage was noticed by Hacker News contributor Nathan Bashaw at around 11:40am PT.

Checking the ever-so-useful website DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com appears to think that Amzon.com isn’t down for just me.

A quick cursory check of the AWS status shows that their cloud services are totally unaffected, so it seems that the outage has only struck their website. The reports of intermittent success for particular users suggests that while the site itself may be down, there could be underlying network issues that may be participating.

In the beginning the image above appeared (after a long wait) but further into the outage the image was replaced with an HTTP error reading “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable”.

A post-mortem of this event will no doubt be interesting looking at how Amazon’s AWS and other services have been seen in the news recently for their reliability.

Update: Amazon.com is now loading properly (albeit a little slowly) and is not throwing the errors it was earlier and came back online at approximately 12:25pm PT. The company has not yet released a statement as to the cause of the outage. It lasted approximately 45 minutes.
