RightScale complements management platform with multi-Cloud cost analytics

RightScale is tackling cloud sprawl in multi-provider environments with a new service that integrates with its flagship management platform to let IT organizations take action before the charges start piling up.

Dubbed Cloud Analytics, the offering can track and visualize usage trends across a wide range of public and private clouds, including AWS, Azure and on-premise OpenStack implementations. The solution helps users keep track of individual instances and “slice and dice” costs by cloud, application, department, and team, according to the company.

Besides providing visibility, Cloud Analytics also boasts “sophisticated forecasting” capabilities that enable  decision makers to predict cloud expenditure based on a combination of historical patterns and growth projections. The same functionality enables admins to create budget controls that can be implemented using the company’s Cloud Management dashboard, which doubles as a source of operational data.

Cloud Analytics is currently in private beta. Pricing will be announced when it becomes generally available in 2014.

“The vast majority of enterprises today have a multi-cloud strategy that encompasses public, private, and hybrid clouds,” said Michael Crandell, the CEO of RightScale. “With Cloud Analytics, we are extending our suite of products to address the business need for optimizing cloud usage. Cloud Analytics enables technical, business, and financial managers to get actionable information that enables successful and cost-effective cloud adoption.”

RightScale wants to simplify just about every aspect of the cloud, from cost management to network administration. Two months ago, the company pulled the curtains back on Network Manager, a tool that provides a common interface for provisioning transport capacity across different public clouds. The software includes access controls, a change log, and a set of configurations designed to make migrations easier. There’s also a built-in Network Map that visualizes network topography.
