It’s been a busy week for Lenovo Group Ltd. This week saw them launching two new phones, one of which looks very much like the new iPhone, and announce a significant increase in net profit for the quarter ending September 30. Here are the highlights:

iPhone 6 copy?

Lenovo has released the Lenovo S90 “Sisley”, which seems to be a blatant copy of Apple Inc.’s iPhone 6. Competitors have copied Apple in the past, but it is surprising to see such a big name like Lenovo, who is the fourth largest smartphone provider in the world, following suit.

The S90 is a thickness of 6.9mm and comes with a quad-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB of RAM, 2,300mAh battery, a 13MP rear-facing camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. The device will ship with Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

The S90, which is currently only available in China, retails for $330.

Vibe X2 & Accessories

lenovo vibe x2Lenovo have also launched the Vibe X2 in India. The device comes with a ‘multi-layered’ design, so from the side you can see three colours stacked on top of each other. The multi-layered concept enables the addition of snap-on accessories called Vibe Xtensions. Accessories include Lenovo’s Vibe X2 Battery, which can be clipped onto the phone like a cover and the X2 Speaker, which functions as a Bluetooth speaker as well as a stand.

The frame has a fingerprint-resistant coating and is made of Magnesium Alloy. It also comes with a 13-megapixel autofocus rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The Vibe X2 is powered by a 2GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6595m processor and comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage.

The Vibe X2 will be available exclusively through FlipKart in India from Monday November 10. The Vibe X2 Battery will be available this month too, while the Vibe X2 Speaker will be available in December. The device will retail for $325.

Earnings call

Lenovo also announced their results this week, for the quarter ending September 30. They have recorded a net profit of $262.1 million, up from $219.7 million the previous year. They shipped more than 16.9 million smartphones in the last quarter. Yuanqing Yang, chairman and CEO of Lenovo said, “Lenovo had another strong quarter that saw excellent market share gains and profit expansion. Not only did we reach nearly 20 percent share in PCs, but we became #1 in the broader PC+ tablet market for the first time”.

Since its recently completed acquisition of Motorola, Lenovo has become a serious mobile player and they are certainly not wasting any time flexing their muscles.
