Tom Surdey, VP for Strategic Alliances and Emerging Partners at VMware Inc. talks about their relationship with Dell Inc., in a live interview with theCUBE at Dell World 2014.
“It’s a very exciting time for VMware if you look at the ecosystem,” says Surdey. There has been a significant upward swing for VMware, particularly around end-user computing, as well as scaling virtualization systems such as EVO: RAIL, VSAN, and vCloud Air. VMware is seeing a massive trend in these areas. “Outside analysts and consultants are telling us now is the time to explode these others products and solutions into the market place, which are measured in billions of dollars over the next three years”, says Surdey.
The relationship between Dell and VMware is one that has been ongoing for close to 10 years and has involved real collaboration between the partners. When asked by theCUBE co-host Dave Vellante, regarding VMware’s relationship with Dell, Surdey spoke about how “Dell is very agile and quick, I have seen them make decisions, we are now trending towards additional areas that we are growing , not only product and solutions, but trying to define that with solutions straight up the stack and into our customers”. This relationship is special for Surdey as well as the VMware team.
Dell was one of the first partners to make the commitment to EVO:RAIL, which also allowed them to enjoy a time to market advantage. With EVO: RAIL, they know have the opportunity to head into high end markets such as federal institutions. “The world is kind of our oyster when you think how we are going to segment and make it special in terms of what Dell and VMware are going to do”, says Surdey.
VSAN is a major investment for VMware, which they are going to continue to scale. It also continues to be a top of mind conversation with Dell and how they go about evolving VSAN.
