Apple Watch gains a slew of new health care apps

docnow from healthtapOn the back of a successful first weekend of pre-orders for the Apple Watch, and in conjunction with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s annual conference taking place in Chicago this week, a slew of healthcare companies yesterday announced Apple Watch apps slated for release alongside the wearable.  (via 9to5Mac)

Included are apps to remind Apple Watch wearers to take their medication, apps enabling access to health records, continuous glucose monitoring for diabetics, video consults with doctors, and more.

Below we take a closer look at a few of the newest healthcare apps for Apple Watch:

Medication Reminders from WebMD

Based on the company’s iPhone app, the WebMD Apple Watch app lets wearers view daily medication schedules and instructions along with pill images with dosage and timing information. The app also reminds wearers when it’s time to take their medication. When prompted, wearers can perform on of four actions: take the medication, skip the medication, snooze the alert or dismiss it altogether.

drchrono EHR (Electronic Health Record)

Aimed predominantly at healthcare professionals, the drchrono app for Apple Watch extends functionality already available for iPad and gives doctors access to messages, chats and notifications for new patient arrivals, new labs and new eRx refills.

Dexcom Follow and Dexcom Share

Approved by the FDA last week, Dexcom’s two Apple Watch apps, Follow and Share, provide continuous glucose monitoring and allow wearers to monitor their glucose levels on the Apple Watch and also gives parents and caregivers remote access to the data and lets them receive alerts in the event a user’s blood glucose drops below and acceptable level.

DocNow App from HealthTap

HelthTap’s DocNow app for Apple Watch allows wearers to access doctors on call 24/7 via video chat. These video consults cost $2.99 per minute and there’s no need to make an appointment. While the wearer initiates the consult via the Apple Watch, the actual video consult happens on the connected iPhone. If authorized, the DocNow app will include relevant health information from the wearers Apple Watch to provide the consulting doctor with a better patient overview.

Other healthcare apps announced include the Every Body Walk!  (an activity tracker), Centered (an activity tracker focused on stress management), cFHR (notifies wearers of suggested preventive screenings, gaps in disease management and prescription refills, and potential drug interactions),  Vocera (life-critical communications and alerts for healthcare professionals), Medisafe (medication management), to name a few.
