ServiceNow firmly in control of their own destiny at Knowledge15 | #know15

Service management professionals from varying enterprises came together at the Knowledge15 event to learn how to manage, enable and operate everything as a service. Dave Vellante and theCUBE co-host Jeff Frick remarked about how much they enjoyed covering the annual Las Vegas-based event every year, this year especially.

Vellante and Frick recapped the daily highlights and spoke about what stood out for them.  They agreed that ServiceNow was one of their favorite conferences, because they have never seen so many excited, satisfied customers. Everyone seemed excited about the new innovations and concepts. Vellante exclaimed, “It’s tremendous! The innovation, great messaging story, new development environment, high availability, a lot of Cloud and mobile modern technology; a lot is going on.”

The Enterprise Resource Planning of IT

In speaking about the success of Knowledge15 and the huge impact ServiceNow had on the event and the participants, Vellante made reference to a conversation he had with his friend Paul Shiels, CEO of Aetna International in 2001/2002. He had asked Shiels, “What is the one thing you would want out of a software company for your IT operation?”

Responding, Shiels said, “I want the ERP of IT.” ServiceNow has built the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) of IT. In essence, ERP for IT unifies data and management so that it is easy to automate processes and connect them. In the end, you are able to acquire a single-version comprehensive view because everything is in one place. ServiceNow is delivering the function of ERP using modern technology with ongoing improvement.

ServieNow has been extending its service to non-IT domains, extending inwards. With admiration, Vellante commended ServiceNow for having the advantage, as it maximized on opportunities within their communities. “IT technology touches every part of the business. Like the government; they are everywhere in your life,” Vellante stated.

Impressive innovation

Frick, making reference to tech companies Oracle Corp. and Apple, reiterated the fact that “most great tech companies have a very strong leader with a personality that helps define the company.” Fred Luddy, chief product officer of ServiceNow, is considered as one such leader. He was referred to by Frick as a “really smart guy who can make it really simple, because he knows what he is doing.” Vellante stated that he has yet to see the “ServiceNow killer.” He confidently said that “ServiceNow controls their own destiny by making bold claims which are execution risks.”

After conducting over 40 interviews in three consecutive days, Vellante said the innovation on the software platform, the developer focus, the technology behind ServiceNow platform and the mobility is very impressive.

In closing, Frick said he believes that the most exciting thing “is a code-less developer.” Good service and ease-of-use will provide the shortest path to success and ongoing value for customers.
