Permabit partners with IBM on data efficiency | #IBMEdge

IBM recently partnered with data efficiency solutions company Permabit Technology Corp. to bring Permabit’s SANblox inline data efficiency to the IBM FlashSystem 9000 and V9000. A market leader in the flash array space, IBM makes data efficiency and capacity optimization priorities and is thus “riding the wave of transformation” that is taking place in the technology industry, according to Permabit CEO Tom Cook.

The challenge of capacity in the flash array space

Discussing Flash economics with theCUBE during IBM Edge2015, Cook said that capacity is the challenge in the flash array space.

“In the past, the market was all about capacity, and performance was the challenge,” he said. “In the end, the cost of storage is the higher of either the cost of your performance or the cost of your capacity. Now, there’s plentiful performance in a V9000, extremely low latency and great scale. The challenge is capacity and bringing down the cost of capacity.”

Permabit plans to continue to work with major companies, such as IBM, EMC, and Hitachi Data Systems Corp., but also storage companies moving up the ladder. “We see a tremendous appetite among the ODMs, the components companies that are growing up and doing more systems work and from the hyperscale companies that really need to build out these capabilities.”
