New features in iOS 9 beta 2: What you need to know

Apple on Tuesday released the second iOS 9 beta to developers and, as is the purpose of beta programs, a few improvements, feature updates and bug fixes have been implemented since the first iOS 9 beta.

The second beta has revealed that iOS 9 can temporarily delete some apps to make space for the update. Once the iOS 9 update is completed, apps that were deleted will be automatically replaced.

This delete/reinstall feature was present in iOS 9 beta 1, but was only discovered when developers installed iOS 9 beta 2.

The team at MacRumors has detailed a number of smaller tweaks unique to iOS 9 beta 2. Here are the highlights:

Podcasts – the Podcast app gets a bolder icon and layout tweaks, including repositioned download buttons.

Handoff – Handoff was not shown in the App Switcher screen in iOS 9 beta 1, but is added back in iOS 9 beta 2.

Search settings – in the Settings app, navigating to General and then Search brings up a list of all installed apps with the ability to include or exclude individual apps from search results via on/off toggle switches.

Apple Watch app – the Apple Watch app has been renamed to “Watch.”

News setting – in preparation for the launch of Apple’s News app, iCloud settings has a “News” on/off toggle.

iPad keyboard – a new undo/redo button is now the default edit function, replacing the cut/paste tool that now only appears when text is selected.

Safari – Safari has a new toggle to show/hide the Tab Bar and Favorites bar, and an option for “Content Blockers” will appear here once a content blocking app is installed.

Other features revealed by iOS 9 beta 1, include three new messaging features, support for content blocking extensions in Safari, and support for cellular Continuity.

A public beta of iOS 9 is due for release sometime in July and the general public release of iOS 9 is slated for September alongside the next iPhone.
