9 cool things you can do with 3D Touch on your iPhone 6s

Perhaps the coolest new iPhone feature – and one of the few that sets the new iPhone 6s apart from the old iPhone 6 – is 3D Touch.

Based on Force Touch, which we first experienced on the Apple Watch, 3D Touch senses how much pressure you apply to your iPhone’s screen, and performs different actions. A light press, for example, gives you a ‘Peek’ into an app, message or web page, while a harder press will ‘Pop’ you into the content.

3D Touch has opened up a slew of new ways to interact with your iPhone and apps. Below we’ve rounded up nine of the coolest things you can do using 3D Touch on your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus.

Adjust 3D Touch sensitivity

When you first use 3D Touch on your iPhone 6s, you’ll likely find it takes some practice to apply just the right amount of pressure to get a Peek instead of a Pop. To make things easier, you can adjust 3D Touch to be more or less sensitive to compensate for your natural tendency to press too hard or not hard enough.

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > scroll to the 3D Touch section > use the slider to set a LightMedium, or Firm sensitivity.

3D Touch turns you iPhone keyboard into trackpad

With 3D Touch, selecting text becomes super-easy. Gone are the days of struggling to position your cursor on the text you need – a firm press on the iPhone keyboard turns it into a trackpad. Hold the press and slide left or right to move the cursor precisely where you want it, then hard press to start highlighting or selecting text, then copy, cut or paste to your heart’s desire.

Peek to see Safari link previews

A light press on a link in Safari will give you a ‘Peek’ at the web page via a popup window instead of taking you away from what you are already reading. If you want to go to the web page, simply press harder to ‘Pop’ into the actual page. If a peek is enough, simply let go and continue reading the original content.

This is also handy when you receive a link via text. A firm press displays a card preview of the web page and you can choose to Open the link, add it to Reading List, or Copy it.

Manage email with a Peek

Using 3D Touch in Apple’s Mail app lets you ‘Peek’ at an email with a firm press without actually opening the email. You’ll also have options to reply, forward, mark as spam, set a notification or move the message.

Launch multitasking without the Home button

A light to firm press on the left-hand side of the screen launches the app switcher and lets you navigate between active apps – no double-press of the Home button needed.

Call or message a contact with the press of a profile picture

A hard press on a contact’s profile picture brings up a menu to call, send a message or start a FaceTime chat and works from Mail, Messages, Contacts, and almost anywhere else their profile pic appears in iOS 9.

View recent photos while still taking new ones

Without leaving the camera app, press lightly on a thumbnail image to ‘Peek’ at a photo. Continue to press and swipe left to navigate between photos or simply let go to carry on shooting.

To open a photo, press harder to ‘Pop’ into it and share, edit, favorite, or delete it.

Peek at playlists in Apple Music

To take a ‘Peek’ at what’s on a particular playlist, simply press on it firmly to see a card showing all the tracks. You’ll also have to option to play, shuffle or add it to your music. If you like what you see, simply press harder to be taken directly o the playlist page.

Launch new Safari tabs

A firm press on the Safari app icon lets you launch a new Safari tab and navigate to your favorites or recent pages, or even open a new Private tab on the fly.
