Effects of the Cloud on tech business customers | #oow15
The tech world is being reshaped by the Cloud. Cloud technologies are becoming a part of every new tech business, and older companies are migrating into the Cloud. That the Cloud represents the future of business computing is without doubt. The real question is, why do companies see so much potential in Cloud technology?
To discuss this question, John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, invited Jeffrey Davis, Principal and Global Oracle Leader at Deloitte Consulting, LLP, to speak with them at the Oracle OpenWorld 2015 conference.
Customers drive the technology
The conversation started with Davis explaining that Cloud companies are responding to the needs of their customers. Customers are demanding agility and speed, he said, which the Cloud provides by removing the need for large capital expenditures and long time-to-value equations. The Cloud enables a much faster pace, allowing vendors to respond more quickly to customer demands.
It’s not enough to put technology out, Davis said, it must be used and adopted. Organizations find it hard to accept change, which hinders larger transformational projects. Cloud technologies, however, can target specific areas of the company for change, rather than the entire thing.
New models, new opportunities
According to Davis, companies have already made their big investments in infrastructure. Their boards aren’t likely to fund new infrastructure investment on top of that. Rather, companies are looking to be more strategic in their investments, seeking new opportunities. The Cloud offers those opportunities at a modest cost, he said.
Another area of concern is security. Davis was very clear on this matter, citing how so many devices are talking yet aren’t integrated under a common security plan. “We need more breakthroughs in security,” he said. Companies, he felt, were not reacting quickly enough to security breaches. Solutions include hardware security and comprehensive end-to-end security plans, he added.
