A true marvel of the modern age: meet Edwin, the smart rubber duck

The Internet of Things has started to change many aspects of our lives, but not so much in the bath tub … until now.

Meet Edwin the Smart Duck, a rubber duckie which does just a touch more than float around a bath tub for a child’s enjoyment.

Described by the company as “a smart toy who guides children through an animated world of stories, games, and songs,” Edwin features a “constantly expanding library of entertaining app content (yes, the duck has apps) along with a BLUETOOTH enabled wireless speaker.

Besides playing music, Edwin also doubles as a game controller that can be used to control an animated version of Edwin through “taps, turns, and twists” on a tablet, because simply having a duck float around a bath tub is so last century.

Edwin’s “Sleepy Time app” sees the duck act as a night light of sorts, and includes the options of playing soothing white noise sounds, additional lullabies, night light intensity and timer controls.

The Edwin music app includes original sing-a-long songs with animated and interactive features, or allows users to stream their favorite music and movies right to Edwin; Ernie from Sesame Street singing the classic “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one” might be an appropriate choice.

For those who might actually want to use Edwin for playing with in the bath, the duck is said to have a unique design feature that allows him to float (seriously) and is also water and mold resistant.

According to The Daily Mail Edwin doesn’t have any privacy or security concerns because he doesn’t have internet-enabled conversation capabilities as do other smart toys such at Mattel’s Hello Barbie do.

How much for this marvel of modern technology?

$99.

That’s $99 for a rubber duck, with free shipping in the United States.

We do indeed live in an amazing age.
