Google Drive goes down for Windows users following faulty software update

If you had problems using Google Drive Thursday, you weren’t alone.

The search giant pushed out a faulty software update to Windows users that caused problems with the service. The client application software, which according to reports appeared to be private build of the new Google Backup and Sync (Drive), resulted in users receiving an error message that states “Sorry, Backup and Sync needs to quit.” Access to Google Drive through browsers was not affected.

Google Inc. confirmed the issue on an app status page, stating that “we’re aware of a problem with Google Drive affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are able to access Google Drive, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behavior.”

A later message stated: “Some users of the Google Drive Sync client for Windows will receive the error message ‘Sorry, Backup and Sync needs to quit’ and will be unable to use the client. Other Sync clients are not affected. Affected users may continue using the Google Drive web interface and mobile applications. We have identified the root cause of the issue and are implementing a potential fix now.”

As of late Thursday night, Google said it fixed the problem and that the Windows client will automatically update with the fixed version within 10 hours from 9 p.m. Pacific. But affected users who don’t wish to wait for the new version can directly download the updated version of the client from https://www.google.com/drive/download/.
