Many companies today are going through “container initiatives” as they try to figure out if they should take their legacy applications and put them into such virtualized environments or if they should limit container storage to new developments, according to Chad Thibodeau (pictured), principal product manager at Veritas Technologies LLC.

In addition, as they are contemplating how to get data protection for a container with guaranteed performance, they also are seeking a storage provider they can trust. Because it is their critical data, at the end of the day they want it to be easily accessible as well as safely guarded, Thibodeau added.

Thibodeau spoke to Stu Miniman (@stu) and James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, during DockerCon17 in Austin, Texas, about Veritas Technologies’ new software-defined storage solution, HyperScale for Containers.

Two planes for data security

Thibodeau explained that as a software-defined storage play, HyperScale for Containers is unique with the concept of two planes: a compute and a data plane.

In the compute plane, there are direct, detached storage nodes that would then attach container volumes to service the application, capturing the highest performance. The data plane contains all of the data management services, such as snapshot, replication, backup and encryption. As there is a clear separation, there is no impact to the compute plane, keeping data much more secure, he explained.

“One of the things we’re doing, we are virtualizing that storage within the server so you could have different tiers. All of it gets virtualized; it’s all now a logical right storage pool,” said Thibodeau.
