Rethinking strategic cloud for a post-migration world at AWS re:Invent

In a market driven by unprecedented data growth, software as a service business models and rapidly expanding integration needs, the agile, connected solutions enabled by cloud computing are no longer aspirational. They’re now the table stakes for modern business.

Cloud-native companies, as well as enterprise incumbents, are re-architecting operations around a more flexible infrastructure model and utilizing technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to extract the greatest value possible from newly available data.

As demands on the platform expand with an increasing number of businesses seeking its performance benefits and developing new cloud-centric tech, how will market leader Amazon Web Services Inc. continue to improve its cloud offerings at scale?

Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at AWS re:Invent 2018, currently underway in Las Vegas, with exclusive commentary and interviews from the livestreaming studio theCUBE. TheCUBE coverage will begin on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PST and ends on Thursday at 4 p.m. PST. (* Disclosure below.)

The adoption of multicloud and hybrid cloud solutions across industries initiated a digital transformation throughout the market, making cloud platform integrations a baseline requirement for competitive performance. Recent Gartner Inc. findings project worldwide public cloud services will grow 17.3 percent in 2019 for a total $206.2 billion market, rising from $175.8 billion in 2018.

While a demand for cloud system infrastructure services currently drives adoption, the shift to more strategic enterprise cloud integration points to a greater focus on True Private Cloud or TPC. Wikibon predicts the global TPC market will reach $262.4 billion by 2027 as businesses seek more effective, custom utilizations of cloud resources.

“This is excellent for users who shouldn’t have to make choices between adopting cloud operating models and exploiting data-first application architectures, like edge computing, AI, and others,” said Peter Burris, an analyst with SiliconANGLE sister market research company Wikibon Inc.

With its deep integrations, comprehensive customer support, and vast partner network, AWS has remained a leader in cloud-based tools, despite growing competition from providers such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba, IBM and Oracle. The company reported a 79 percent increase in operating profit for the second quarter of 2018, bringing current total cloud revenue to $6.11 billion.

Amazon’s early start in the cloud continues to pay dividends in the partnerships and insights AWS provides its users. In September, the company deepened its alliance with Salesforce.com Inc. to provide improved data transference for its shared customer community, just one in a series of network expansions AWS has announced to streamline cloud processes.

In addition to its focus on optimizing cloud customer experience, AWS is leveraging its powerful cloud as a foundation for groundbreaking future technology. Cloud storage capacity and scalability provide the framework necessary to capitalize on automation technologies and other data-powered tools, and AWS is cultivating its environment to enable an innovative, accessible AI development community.

“As we look ahead to the seventh annual re:Invent conference late this month, AWS continues to impress with its deep investments in building a sophisticated AI ecosystem,” said James Kobielus, an analyst with Wikibon.

Eager to take advantage of all the platform has to offer, organizations of all sizes are adopting a cloud-first approach as its new developments provide indispensable process improvements and innovation opportunities. How does AWS plan to maintain its pace of innovation, commitment to customer service, and healthy partner network amidst growing cloud challenges of scale and security? All this and more will be explored at this year’s re:Invent.

Keynote speakers at AWS re:Invent include Andy Jassy, chief executive officer, AWS; Peter DeSantis, vice president, AWS global infrastructure; Terry Wise, vice president of global alliances ecosystems and channels, AWS; and Dr. Werner Vogels, chief technology officer, Amazon.com.
