Google Pixel 4 will reportedly pack 90Hz display and 2 rear cameras

A new leak provides the most detailed look yet at the Pixel 4 phone Google LLC is expected to debut in October.

Citing a “reliable source,” 9to5Google reported today that the handset will come in two models with significantly improved displays. The standard Pixel 4 packs a 5.7-inch screen, while the Pixel 4 XL comes in at 6.3 inches, according to the tipster.

In addition, both models have a 90Hz refresh rate, which means the phones will render graphics at a speed of 90 frames per second, a 50% improvement over the Pixel 3. That should translate into noticeably smoother visuals.

Only a handful of handsets currently feature 90Hz support. One of the bestselling devices in the category, the OnePlus 7 Pro, has been praised by reviewers for the responsiveness its display brings to tasks such as scrolling the web and navigating the Android interface.

The higher refresh rate isn’t the only upgrade in the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. According to today’s leak, the devices will feature Qualcomm Inc.’s latest-generation Snapdragon 855 along with 6 gigabytes of memory, up from 4GB before.

The leaked information adds to the details Google has released about the device through official channels. Last month, the company revealed that the Pixel 4 will feature a miniaturized radar sensor to let users remotely interact with their devices using hand gestures. Earlier, Google posted an image on Twitter showing the back of the Pixel 4 with a bump featuring what appears to be a pair of lenses placed parallel to each other.

The source who spoke to 9to5Google provided new information about that detail as well. The Pixel 4 will reportedly feature two rear cameras: a 12-megapixel sensor with autofocus and a 16-megapixel telephoto lens for capturing scenes from a longer distance. This represents a significant upgrade over the single 12.2-megapixel camera on the back of the Pixel 3.

Google seems to be making a particular effort to target mobile photography enthusiasts. The company is said to be readying a “DSLR-like attachment,” which, if comparable accessories already on the market are any indication, is a digital single-lens reflex camera that can be affixed to the Pixel 4. DSLR devices are much more powerful than the average built-in smartphone camera thanks to their larger image sensors.

The leak of the upcoming phone’s details comes as the head of the Pixel business is leaving for another job at Google, according to a report from Axios. Mario Queiroz, the vice president and general manager of the Pixel business, is leaving that job to work directly for Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai. Rick Osterloh, head of Google’s overall hardware unit, will oversee the Pixel business for now, according to the report.
