Video allegedly shows hands-on with Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip

More details have come to light on Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. latest folding phone, including an alleged hands-on video of the device.

Previously reported to be called the Galaxy Fold 2, the phone is now believed to be known as the Galaxy Z Flip.

That doesn’t preclude a direct successor to the original, troubled Galaxy Fold but is instead the start of a new line of smartphones from Samsung. It also fits in with reports dating back as far as March that Samsung was designing two new foldable phones.

The Galaxy Z Flip uses a clamshell form factor reminiscent of Motorola’s RAZR phones from the 1990s, a design returning for the smartphone age with the Motorola RAZR 2020 smartphone set to be released later this month.

The best demonstration of the form factor is in the new alleged hands-on video that has some raised questions about its origin. If it’s fake, it’s extraordinarily well-done, with the video showing the Galaxy Z Flip in detail.

The notable change from previous reports is that the phone, at least in the video, has only a very small external display believed to be 1.06 inches that shows very basic information. The Motorola RAZR 2020, by contrast, has a 2.7-inch external display that has some limited usability.

What is confirmed by the video is that the inside screen is 6.7 inches. The Verge reports that the phone may feature a new form of “ultra-thin glass” instead of a plastic screen for additional durability, though that’s not clear from the video.

The phone is believed to have two 12-megapixel rear cameras, one main and one ultrawide and another with a 10-megapixel front-facing camera. Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip is believed to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor supported by 8 gigabytes of RAM, 256GB of onboard storage and a 3,300-mAh battery. The phone will be offered only in 4G with no 5G version available, at least at launch.

Price is said to be $1,400, although that’s obviously not confirmed. It is believed, however, that the phone will be significantly cheaper than the Galaxy Fold, which starts at $1,980.

The big question is when it will be announced. Samsung has a Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for Feb. 11 in San Francisco and that would be the obvious date, presuming the phone is ready.

That event will see the launch of the new Galaxy S20 lineup, the successor to the Galaxy S10. Sometimes, like Apple Inc., Samsung likes to throw in a surprise or two at its major launch events.
