Watch live: VeeamON 2020 furthers US push, remains resilient in COVID-19 market

As COVID-19 continues to affect the operating culture of almost every enterprise tech company around the world, some organizations’ sales numbers remain intact and are even growing. Case in point: Veeam Software Corp.

The company’s enterprise products, which include backup, disaster recovery, and intelligent data management software, have earned a reputation of “it just works” — a reputation that has held strong in the midst of a global pandemic.

“The numbers that we have achieved are the same as if COVID-19 hadn’t hit,” said Danny Allan, chief technology officer of Veeam. “What I can say is that from a business results standpoint, it’s been good. From a product strategy standpoint … it’s actually been better than good.”

In January, Veeam was acquired by private equity firm Insight Partners for $5 billion. Under its new ownership, Veeam moved its headquarters from Switzerland to the U.S. with an eye toward growing its U.S. enterprise market share. This followed the company’s announcement in May 2019 that it surpassed $1 billion in bookings. Veeam executives will discuss its current and future trajectory during the VeeamON 2020 virtual event, which will kick off June 17.

TheCUBE will be conducting interviews with key Veeam executives. Discussion topics include how Veeam is managing the COVID-induced market downturn, the new role of data backup and recovery, thought leadership on managing secure cloud, the company’s latest integrations with AWS and Azure, and product updates, including a preview of Veeam Availability Suite v11. “Business resiliency, work from home, people really thinking about data protection has really come to the fore,” said Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon, SiliconANGLE Media’s sister company. “So some of the other trends that are tailwinds — cloud, data, the whole notion of multicloud — I’m sure we’re going to hear a lot about this at the VeeamON virtual [event].”

Evolving products and partners

While Veeam rose to prominence with its backup solution for popular virtual machine provider VMware Inc., the company has expanded its partner ecosystem with the likes of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., alongside points of integration across most of the major public cloud platforms. The popularity of cloud computing is presenting new market opportunities for Veeam as it focuses efforts on backing up containerized applications, multicloud architectures, and the edge of the computing network.

“We’re seeing the increasing importance of protecting containers,” Vellante said. “Data management is another big topic — moving beyond backup and recovery into managing data across clouds and ensuring a consistent experience. Also protecting against ransomware attacks.”

Recent releases for backup services to support hyperconverged infrastructure provider Nutanix and Microsoft Azure’s public cloud demonstrate Veeam’s progress on the multicloud front, particularly as Veeam addresses market demand for backup across multiple use cases, from on-premises to cloud and hybrid cloud to software services. Veeam’s most noteworthy recent development, however, is the general availability of the Veeam Availability Suite version 10.

The latest iteration of its flagship backup solution, Veeam Availability Suite, first launched in 2008 and modernizes with automated features for disaster recovery, boosted ransomware protection, and Multi-VM Instant Recovery. It’s all designed to expedite enterprises’ digital transformations, where cloud-based data protection is key to providing uninterrupted access to applications and data for next-gen cloud data management.

Veeam’s product evolution and partner ecosystem are crucial to its efforts in gaining market share in the U.S., as the rivals are plenty.

“Market-wise, Veeam competes with the big guns like Dell EMC. Also Commvault, Veritas, and new players, including Cohesity and Rubrik. And we’re seeing new specialists emerge such as Clumio, which only runs in the cloud,” Vellante said.
