Watch live: ‘Accelerating with automation and programmability’ headlines DevNet special event

Last year, the “Harvard Business Review” published a list of the top 20 S&P 500 and Global 2000 companies that ranked highest in new growth transformation. In 15th position on that list was Cisco Systems Inc., a company that is not only making a transformation to software, but actively embracing the developer community in doing so.

After 36 years in business, Cisco has decided to make a major transformation to software and bring the developer community with it. The company recently disclosed that in FY 2020, 51% of its revenue was generated through the sale of software and services — and 78% of software sales came from subscriptions.

During a special DevNet Create event, “Accelerating With Automation and Programmability,” on October 8 from 1 to 3 PM EDT, Cisco will spotlight new developer opportunities and the growing edge computing market. TheCUBE analysts will talk with Cisco executives and industry experts about the DevNet ecosystem’s growth, COVID’s impact on Cisco’s business, and how automation and programmability are impacting digital transformation. Cisco will hold its full free virtual DevNet Create event on October 13. (* Disclosure below.)

The power users of enterprise software

As Cisco embraces its new focus, the company continues to expand its developer network through its DevNet program, which launched six years ago. DevNet recently expanded its certifications program to help professionals combine infrastructure expertise with programming.

“What Cisco is doing is taking Cisco Certified Engineers and retraining them and teaching them how to code on Cisco products,” said Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon Inc., SiliconANGLE Media’s sister market research firm, and host of theCUBE. “Cisco products are designed to be programmable, so they have a developer play — and I say the edge will be won by developers.”

DevNet is now playing an important role in the industry, as many network engineers become power users of enterprise software. DevNet’s platforms include networking and security, open source, cloud, internet of things and the data center — all part of a unified computing universe that revolves around the API, a key element for Cisco products users.

“I actually view the platforms as part of a bigger system,” said Susie Wee, senior vice president and chief technology officer of DevNet and CX ecosystem at Cisco, during an interview with theCUBE in January. “They’re part of a platform that’s trying to solve a bigger problem, and the secret is APIs.”

Cisco’s DevNet certifications provide knowledge about how networks work and how to automate and secure them. The company offers CyberOps certification and Enterprise and DevNet Professional credentialing.

“For network professionals, the future is software,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst with ZK Research, in a recent story for eWeek. “Cisco’s DevNet can help chart a path through what might look like murky waters, but is quite achievable.”
