Bitrise raises $60M help devs keep up with mobile DevOps
Bitrise Ltd., a mobile DevOps company that helps developers get apps out faster, announced Thursday that it has secured $60 million in new funding led by Insight Partners.
The Series C round was also joined by existing investors Partech, Open Ocean, Zobito, Fiedler Capital, Y Combinator and H14.
The company was founded in 2014 to build an end-to-end mobile development platform for DevOps teams, with an aim to automate workflow processes, reduce manual labor tedium, ease complexity during the release cycle and reduce bugs during deployment. As a result, developers can get back to what they do best: writing code and focusing on developing the next big features for customers.
This is critically important given the rapid-fire pace of mobile development driven by competition and the ever-increasing number of mobile app downloads. The number of app downloads has been increasing constantly since 2016, according to Statista, with more than 218 million downloads in 2020.
Even worse for developers, Bitrise Chief Executive Barnabas Birmacher (pictured) told SiliconANGLE is that the mobile market is particularly unforgiving when bugs or issues happen. A poor customer experience with a mobile app can lead to lost revenue or a quick uninstall.
“The way mobile operations are currently staffed and organized, only a fraction of the top 1% of mobile companies are equipped to reach critical adoption and long-term profitability,” said Birmacher. “Success is skewed in favor of companies with the largest talent pools and budgets, rather than defined by creativity, customer centricity and excellent user experiences.”
In the past year, Bitrise updated its platform with a next-generation enterprise-grade update designed to allow companies to get their mobile app updates out faster. It also released Bitrise Insights, which provides insights into build statistics to improve performance and stability.
In addition, the platform has “doubled down on speed,” Birmacher said. Build speeds for Android have been improved 20% and every part of the website has been improved, including load time of logs have been improved by more than 60%.
Bitrise also recently unveiled Gen2, a new faster build infrastructure for iOS running fully on macOS, with a macOS hypervisor, cloud-scale orchestration and enterprise-grade security. With Gen2, Bitrise seeks to future-proof build infrastructure for iOS apps.
In the wake of the pandemic, the company has also transitioned to remote-first. Birmacher said that has allowed Bitrise to attract new talent from around the world, including new team members in Spain, Germany and Japan.
The new investment brings Bitrise’s total funding to almost $100 million. The company intends to use the funds to expand customer reach and support further development of its platform.
