Snowflake becomes latest cloud-native powerhouse to build a bridge with the on-prem world

The gravitational pull of the on-premises compute environment in proving hard to resist.

In 2019, Amazon Web Services Inc. opened its cloud-native doors to include an on-prem data-sharing option with the introduction of AWS Outposts. Now another major cloud-native player, Snowflake Inc., has added on-premises functionality.

This week during Dell Technologies World in Las Vegas, Snowflake and Dell announced a partnership to connect data from Dell Technologies Inc.’s on-premises storage portfolio with the Snowflake Data Cloud.

“We’ve had a lot of success breaking down silos from a workload perspective where we’ve expanded the platform to be data warehousing and data engineering, machine learning and data science,” said Clarke Patterson (pictured, right), head of product marketing at Snowflake. “This partnership is the next leg of the stool. Now we have this opportunity to expand into the on-premises world and people can bring all of those datasets together.”

Patterson spoke with industry analyst Dave Vellante at the Dell Technologies World event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He was joined by Martin Glynn (pictured, left), senior director of storage product management at Dell’s, and they discussed how customers can leverage the new solution in the months ahead. Connection with Snowflake ecosystem

The new capability is scheduled for release in the second half of 2022. Users of Snowflake’s Data Cloud will be able to add data from Dell’s on-prem-based object storage arrays.

“The sharing component comes into this,” Patterson said. “You can think of having an on-premises data strategy, but you can connect to cloud-native customers and suppliers that live in the Snowflake ecosystem, and that wasn’t possible before.”

Dell’s goal is to make it easier for users to integrate with Snowflake, leading to greater flexibility for customers in multicloud environments, according to Glynn. The new initiative is the result of a lengthy process of research and collaboration between the two companies.

“We started with a blank sheet and lots of long customer conversations, and this is what resulted,” Glynn said. “We got a lot of feedback from our big joint customers about this system over here, this potential integration over there. This is just the beginning; we have lots of potential here.”
