Continuing acquisition spree, HPE buys infrastructure monitoring startup OpsRamp
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. is acquiring OpsRamp Inc., a startup with a platform that helps companies detect and fix malfunctions in their infrastructure. The OpsRamp acquisition price, while not disclosed, is a strategic investment for HPE in enhancing its infrastructure capabilities.
HPE announced the deal today. It marks the fourth acquisition the company has made since the start of the year.
“Customers today are managing several different cloud environments, with different IT operational models and tools, which dramatically increases the cost and complexity of digital operations management,” said HPE Chief Technology Officer Fidelma Russo. “The combination of OpsRamp and HPE will remove these barriers.”
Infrastructure monitoring tools generate an alert when they detect a potential malfunction in one of a company’s systems. Historically, many such alerts contained duplicate data, which complicated troubleshooting initiatives. There are also false positives, or notifications warning of malfunctions that prove to be routine system changes.
OpsRamp’s namesake platform promises to reduce the number of alerts that administrators must review. According to the startup, its platform can remove up to 95% of unnecessary alerts. It does so by artificial intelligence algorithms to filter duplicate notifications and false positives.
After isolating the alerts that do warrant administrators’ attention, OpsRamp prioritizes them by urgency. The platform then routes each alert to the administrator best equipped to fix the issue. According to the company, its AI algorithms surface key technical information about each malfunction to help speed up troubleshooting.
Alongside its monitoring features, the startup’s platform includes a workflow automation tool. The tool allows administrators to create scripts that perform common maintenance tasks without manual input. Companies can, for example, use OpsRamp to automatically download antivirus updates when they become available.
HPE says OpsRamp has thousands of customers worldwide. The data center equipment giant is itself a customer of the startup, as well as an investor. HPE’s Pathfinder venture capital arm contributed to a $37.5 million funding round that OpsRamp raised in 2020.
The acquisition is expected to close by the end of July. Afterwards, HPE intends to integrate OpsRamp’s technology into its GreenLake product portfolio. GreenLake is a collection of data center systems and software tools that companies can purchase on a pay-as-you-go basis, like in the public cloud, instead of buying everything upfront.
GreenLake is also a central pillar of HPE’s revenue growth strategy. Last quarter, the company disclosed that the annualized recurring revenue generated by the product portfolio has exceeded $1 billion. According to HPE, GreenLake is helping 65,000 customers manage over two million connected devices and over one exabyte of data.
The purchase of OpsRamp is the fourth acquisition the company has announced since the start of the year. In January, it acquired Pachyderm Inc., a provider of AI development tools. Pachyderm’s software makes it easier to create data pipelines, automation workflows that help manage the information used in AI projects.
HPE has also acquired two network technology providers this year. A few weeks ago, it bought Axis Security Ltd., a startup with a platform that helps companies secure employees’ network connections to work applications. Earlier, HPE acquired a company called Athonet SRL that provides technology for building 5G infrastructure.
