Dell debuts new managed services for ML developers and data scientists
Dell Technologies Inc. said today it’s hoping to make life easier for application developers and data scientists with the launch of a trio of new managed service offerings.
The technology infrastructure giant said today the Dell Managed Developer Cloud, Dell Managed Services for MLOps and Colocation with Dell Technologies Services offerings are all being made available starting today. Although each one is designed to perform a very different task, all three services are aimed at boosting productivity and accelerating innovation, Dell said.
Dell believes enterprises desperately need a productivity boost. It cites research from International Data Corp. that shows how developers spend less than 20% of their time actually coding, with the rest of their efforts focused on things like infrastructure management and waiting around for information technology resources. Similarly, data scientists also struggle with productivity and waste a lot of time on projects that end up going nowhere. According to McKinsey & Co., only 36% of machine learning projects are deployed beyond the model stage, meaning that almost two-thirds never make it into production.
Another challenge Dell is seeking to address is the cost of developing machine learning and artificial intelligence. For many companies, there’s a big temptation to embrace easy-to-consume public cloud services, but when they do, they quickly come up against challenges integrating their existing systems and data.
Added to that, training large language models requires massive amounts of compute power and incredibly large datasets, meaning that costs can quickly accelerate. There are privacy concerns too, and as a result, more businesses are interested in running their AI and machine learning development operations internally. However, building a private cloud for this purpose provides another challenge.
That’s where Dell thinks it can help with its new managed services. The Dell Managed Developer Cloud provides developers with access to self-service virtual machines and software containers in an application programming interface-based cloud environment. It also provides built-in infrastructure-as-code capabilities to simplify management of the underlying servers and storage infrastructure, freeing developers to spend more of their time on coding.
As for Dell Managed Services for MLOps, it’s billed as a comprehensive machine learning model development platform that offers integrated lifecycle management based on Dell’s validated designs. It helps to reduce the complexity of deploying and maintaining AI and machine learning systems, so data scientists can get their models into production faster
Finally, Colocation with Dell Technologies Services is a managed offering that helps developers and data scientists alike to streamline the process of cloud integration in order to build cloud-hosted apps that leverage the company’s internal systems and data. Dell said it has struck deals with a range of colocation services providers to ensure a flexible choice of locations and infrastructure for its customers.
