Sonrai Security simplifies cloud access and permissions with new firewall service

Public cloud security startup Sonrai Security Inc. today announced a new firewall solution for Amazon Web Services Inc., Azure and Google Cloud that offers one-click least privilege with zero disruption for cloud operations and development teams.

Called Cloud Permissions Firewall, the new service is said to transform the complex landscape of cloud access and permissions security into a streamlined process with just one click.

Sonrai argues that between AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, there are more than 42,000 possible permissions and new ones added daily, with thousands of permissions that can be leveraged to do damage such as exposing data, nefarious entry, privilege escalation and lateral movement. As companies move to the cloud, unused sensitive access and privileges continue to increase and hence leave gaping security holes.

That’s where Sonrai Cloud Permissions Firewall steps in. The new service leverages sensitive access and permissions intelligence to identify and determine the necessary access or rights required for running workloads in the cloud. It then instantaneously blocks unnecessary and risky access to cloud services and permissions across the entire cloud estate, according to the company.

The key to the new service is to block unnecessary and risky access while also not causing delays and issues. Development is uninhibited, with automated exceptions for needed access and a frictionless permission-on-demand workflow that supports permission expansion as needed.

“We have worked with companies and developers tasked with thousands of extra things to fix in their code and it’s not working to solve this pressing security problem or privilege and access bloat,” co-founder and Chief Executive Brendan Hannigan said. “We knew there was a better option than just another ‘visibility tool.’ The Cloud Permissions Firewall delivers action that automatically closes these security vulnerabilities with zero disruption to ongoing operations.”

The firewall delivers a 92% reduction in the cloud permissions attack surface, 97% time saved accomplishing the least privilege and 100% protection of new identities, the company claims.

Sonrai is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised $88.5 million in funding, according to Tracxn, including a round of $50 million in 2021. Investors in the company include Istari Global Ltd., Menlo Ventures, Polaris Partners (Polaris Growth Management LLC), TenEleven Ventures and New Brunswick Innovation Foundation Inc.
