HP applies AI to fix the most maddening printing problems as it debuts new AI PCs

HP Inc. today said it’s addressing some of the most common frustrations users have with printing webpages by introducing a new technology that it advertises as the “industry’s first intelligent print experience.”

HP Print AI features a new capability called Perfect Output that reformats and reorganizes content to fit on the page in a way that closely matches what the user sees on the screen. The feature does away with much of the unnecessary white space that is common when printing web screens and can detect and remove unwanted content such as ads and unnecessary text.

Perfect Output also addresses common problem with printing spreadsheets, which tend to break across pages if columns exceed the page size. Perfect Output “proactively create a printable spreadsheet without splitting tables and charts across pages,” HP said.

AI capabilities are also applied to setup by walking users through each step of the configuration process, remembering preferences and responding to natural language inquiries. Print AI also corrects common errors by automatically resizing images and removing unwanted objects.

The company also introduced a capability for commercial printers that automatically recognizes the type of documents being scanned and extracts information based on the customer’s business needs. Vertical market capabilities address design and construction professionals.

HP Print AI is available today on a beta test basis with full rollouts to continue through 2025. HP said the AI features will work with any of the company’s printers as long as they’re connected to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine and have the correct drivers installed.

Speedy AI PCs

HP also introduced a new line of artificial intelligence-powered two-in-one PCs featuring a new memory architecture that the company said delivers fast performance for complex workflows. The machines feature AI-enable videoconferencing and the ability to share pricey graphics processing units.

AI PCs feature AI capabilities embedded into their hardware and software, typically through the use of GPUs or neural processing units. This enables them to handle complex AI tasks locally without needing cloud resources.

“It’s like having a team of experts supporting you and right at your fingertips,” said Alex Chou, president of personal systems at HP. “With my AI PC I can create a local library of documents that is available to me to summarize, research and ask questions.”

The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14-inch Next-Gen AI PCs (pictured) come in an ultrathin form factor that can act as a laptop, tablet and in tent mode. The feature a 3K Organic Light-Emitting Diode display with inking and haptic touchpad, nine megapixel camera and advance audio.

GPU sharing

A new feature called HP Boost is intended to address the shortage of graphics processing units that plagues many data science organizations. “GPU resource sharing utilization is typically only at 25% at the company level,” Chou said. “HP Boost Is the first and only solution for on-demand GPUs, turning the workstation into a shareable resource.” Data science teams within HP are getting up to 700% acceleration in on-demand compute capability through HP Boost, he said.

Leveraging the Intel Corp. Core Ultra processor, the new portables deliver up to 20 hours of battery life and include a security chip and self-healing PC core. The memory architecture delivers 8000 Mb per second of speed on 64 gigabyte LPDDR5X dynamic random access memory chips from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

An Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Ryzen Pro processor supports up to 55 trillions of operations per second with 40-watt dual-turbo high-density fans keeping things cool. The machines use onboard generative AI for local processing.

HP’s Workforce Solutions division also announced expanded access to its Workforce Experience Platform with new monitoring capabilities that remediate incidents before employees are affected. The platform, which intelligently anticipates and resolves system problems from a single dashboard, has already been installed on more than 270,000 devices, the company said. Administrators can monitor, secure and manage printer performance at large scale and integrate with popular business intelligence and service platforms from Microsoft Corp., Salesforce Inc. and ServiceNow Inc.
