Docker Inc. founder and CTO Solomon Hykes sat down with theCUBE during DockerCon 2015 to discuss the state of the technology industry and Docker’s place as it begins a serious uptick. Currently, the tools need to catch up with the technology.
“Everyone expects their app to be online all the time, always working,” he said. “The need is there, but the tools are not ready. So everyone’s making it work with the old tools and hoping new tools will come along.”
In the pressure to work harder and faster to create new applications and migrate to the Cloud, Hykes said the greatest tension comes from the disparity between developers and operations engineers.
“They have different needs and priorities, but they need to work together,” he said. “Docker is at the middle of those two worlds. We’re splitting the two efforts so that each area can focus on the right audience.”
Hykes also took time to discuss Project Orca, which aims to provide an integrated stack that incorporates Docker Engine, Docker Swarm, Networking, GUI, Docker Compose, security, plus tools for installation, deployment and configuration. Of Docker’s build-ship-run focus, Project Orca focuses on the third component.
“There’s been a lot of demand for the run,” said Hykes. “I, as the enterprise, have this great application; how do I use my infrastructure to build a deployment platform that can run all my apps in a scalable way? That’s what Project Orca is about.”
