It’s a new year and that means there are new iPhones on the horizon – albeit on the distant horizon. Apple traditionally releases new iPhones every fall, and rumors are already flying about suggesting what we may expect from this year’s phones, dubbed the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the media.
The latest rumor, from Chinese media outlet MyDrivers (via 9to5Mac), suggests that this year’s iPhone 7 Plus will pack a bigger battery and a significant bump in storage.
Citing sources in Apple’s supply chain, the report claims that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will come in the same two sizes – 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches – as 2016’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but the iPhone 7 Plus will benefit from a 3,100mAh battery and up to 256GB internal storage.
At 256GB, the iPhone 7 Plus will have double the maximum storage available on current iPhone models. The report does not detail what the addition of a 256GB model means for the rest of the iPhone 7 lineup, and it remains to be seen if Apple does away with the entry-level 16GB option or merely tacks on a new option at the high-end of the price and storage range.
As for the battery, a 3,100mAh unit is about 10 percent bigger than the 2,915mAh unit in the current iPhone 6s Plus, but actual battery life gains will depend on how power efficient the iPhone 7 Plus’ other upgraded internal components are.
Another rumor suggests that Apple could opt to replace the standard 3.5mm headphone jack with a Lighting connector in an effort to make the iPhone 7 even thinner than current models. If this is the case, there may not be enough space for a bigger battery, but time will tell.
Other changes we could see in this year’s iPhone 7 lineup include the Home button disappearing as it and the Touch ID sensor are incorporated into the iPhone’s display, a water resistant design thanks to self-healing ports, a new Liquidmetal chassis, wireless charging, and a new A10 processor with 3GB of RAM.
Apple is also rumored to launch a new four-inch iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 6c as it replaces the iPhone 5c, during the first quarter of 2016. The iPhone 6c is said to have an all-metal design similar to that of the iPhone 6’s and feature a 1,642mAh battery, an A9 processor with 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM.
