IBM Gets Mobile Security with 3 New Initiatives

IBM today announced 3 new initiatives targeting enterprise and large-scale mobile and instrumented device security. The devices in turn range from Smartphones and tablets to ATMs, retail kiosks, traffic systems, meters and buildings, and the press release cited IDC’s predictions of one trillion connected devices and a $10 billion endpoint security market value by 2015/4. In turn, the first offering is Tivoli Endpoint Manager:

“IBM today is announcing Tivoli Endpoint Manager, a new offering that integrates the assets acquired with BigFix into the IBM portfolio. The software extends IBM’s capabilities to manage the security and compliance of servers, desktops, roaming laptops, and point-of-sale devices, such as ATMs and self-service kiosks.”

IBM reports the new software “can be deployed in days for any network size or configuration” and combines endpoint and security management. Tivoli is apparently very scalable too, since IBM reports it can execute updates to half a million devices in a matter of a few minutes.

The second IBM offering unveiled today is divided into 2 parts. The first is a partnership with Juniper Networks to deliver joint mobile security for all the leading platforms via the Juniper Networks Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite, which also integrates policy-based enforcement. The second part was an announcement the company is “prototyping new technologies to seamlessly manage security and compliance challenges” in context to mobile platforms. Android was highlighted.

Last but not least, the third initiative IBM announced today is a smart meter R&D project. Not much was disclosed, but a remote and secure access factor was noted. IBM has been very active in mobile throughout the last 36 hours, and it earlier announced a patent cross-license agreement with Samsung.

IBM’s mobile competition has also been busy lately. We covered HTC’s fresh content investments, as well as the  recent Motorola Xoom tablet availability update.
