Facebook to start showing users where posts originate
Facebook Inc. said today that it will start showing users where posts come from in order to improve transparency.
The company said in a blog post that when posts are made from “high-reach” accounts both on Facebook and Instagram, where that post was created will be displayed with the text or the image. Facebook didn’t add any more details as to what is a high-reach account.
The location information won’t be detailed. If a post came from Brazil, the text will merely say, “Poster based in Brazil.”
The company said the reason behind the move is “so people have more information to help them gauge the reliability and authenticity of the content they see in their feeds.” That’s especially important during the election period, Facebook said.
Since the debacle of the 2016 U.S. presidential election when foreign bad actors used the social media behemoth to stir up emotions, Facebook has implemented a number of initiatives to crackdown on such troll farms.
Still, the bad actors, often working with the troll farm “Russian Internet Research Agency,” have only just recently been found to be working from countries inside Africa. Some of them pose as authentic nongovernmental organizations but have been found to be troll farms. The intention is usually to point out social issues in the U.S. and by doing so sow seeds of discord.
The new program will start with accounts based outside the U.S. that reach a lot of people inside the country. The company said it’s also now exploring ways to bring this kind of transparency to other nations.
“These changes are part of our broader efforts to protect elections and increase transparency on Facebook and Instagram so people can make more informed decisions about the posts they read, trust and share,” Facebook said.
