Samsung set to debut Note 20 and Fold 2 at August online-only event

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. today announced it will hold its annual Unpacked event Aug. 5, and unsurprisingly in the age of COVID-19, it will be an exclusively online affair.

At the annual event, one of two Samsung holds each year, the South Korean smartphone giant is expected to debut the Galaxy Note 20 alongside an update to the Galaxy Fold.

The Galaxy Note 20 is, as per previous versions, likely to follow in the footsteps of the Galaxy S range. Exactly how Samsung will differentiate the Note from the S range, aside from offering a stylus, remains open to speculation. The S20 range had included the S20 Ultra, a 6.9-inch smartphone that is larger than the previous Note 10+, which came at 6.8 inches.

Current reports for the Note 20 lineup include a three-model lineup similar to the S20 range be it with the Note models offered with the pitch of enterprise-friendly features. As with all Notes, all three will offer S-Pen, Samsung’s smart stylus, as standard, though there’s some speculation that there will be new functions this year.

The Note 20 Ultra is speculated to be an update on the S20 Ultra with a similar five-camera setup but in a thinner package. The S20 Ultra camera setup, currently ranked as the best camera setup among smartphones not from Chinese companies according to Dxomark, has a large camera bump. Rumors suggest that Samsung has found a way to reduce the size of that bump with the Note 20 Ultra.

Given Samsung’s 15-second promotional video for the event, it’s also strongly speculated that the Note 20 will also offer a new metallic color. Engadget describes the color as “Mystic Gold,” but the video appears to show more of a metallic bronze.

Under the hood, the Note 20 range could see the use of a reported Qualcomm Inc. Snapdragon 865 Plus central processing unit with 5G support as standard. The S20 range featured a standard Snapdragon 865 in North America.

While it could be argued in the age of 6.9-inch flagship Samsung phones that the Note range isn’t all that exciting, the possible debut of the Galaxy Fold is more interesting.

Samsung debuted the Galaxy Fold alongside the Galaxy S10 in February 2019. The concept was mostly well-received in contrast to the pre-release of the phone, which wasn’t. Tech reviewers in April 2019 found that the phones broke after only two days of use, causing Samsung to push back the release of the phone multiple times. The Fold eventually went on sale in September.

The new version of the Fold, possibly set to be called the Galaxy Z Fold 2 — the Z branding coming from the Galaxy Z Flip that debuted in February — is speculated to see a specifications update under the hood, including a Snapdragon 865 with 5G support.

Along with the Note 20 and Fold 2, Samsung may also debut a refreshed Galaxy Tab S lineup along with a new Galaxy Watch 3, according to 9to5 Google. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 lineup is Samsung’s competition to Apple Inc.’s iPads.

The online Samsung Unpacked event is scheduled for Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. EDT via the Samsung Global Newsroom and Samsung.com.
