Accelerating data protection post-pandemic is central theme at VeeamON event

As organizations implement digital transformation initiatives to enhance customer service, maximize cost savings and modernize business operations, a few roadblocks can get in the way. Legacy IT and outdated data protection capabilities are two of the biggest obstacles.

To address these issues, Veeam Software Corp. will host VeeamON, a free online conference that will be held May 25-27. Themed “Accelerate Your Data Protection Strategy,” the event will explore trends and the future of modern data protection and feature industry expert advice and tips on ransomware recovery, best practices for Kubernetes backup and Microsoft Office 365 backup, and more.

“Over the past 12 months, CXOs across the globe have faced a unique set of challenges around how to ensure data remains protected in a highly diverse, operational landscape,” said Danny Allan, chief technology officer and senior vice president of product strategy at Veeam Software Corp. in a recent article. “In response to the pandemic, we have seen organizations accelerate DX initiatives by years and months in order to stay in business. However, the way data is managed and protected continues to undermine them.”

Veeam’s “Data Protection Report 2021” underscores the challenges thwarting the ability to execute DX initiatives globally, finding, for example, that 58% of backups fail, leaving data unprotected. The report also found that 40% of CXOs cite inadequate data protection, and the challenges to business continuity posed by the pandemic are hindering organizations’ initiatives to transform.

The report surveyed more than 3,000 IT decision-makers at global enterprises to understand their approaches to data protection and data management. Claiming to be the largest of its kind, Veeam’s study examines how organizations expect to be prepared for the IT challenges they face, including reacting to demand changes and interruptions in service, global influences (such as COVID-19), and more aspirational goals of IT modernization and DX.

Event speakers at VeeamON will include Veeam’s Danny Allan, chief technology officer, and Dave Russell, vice president of enterprise strategy, as well as Kimberly LaGrue, chief information officer, Office of Information Technology & Innovation, at the City of New Orleans; Mike Leach, VP of hosting operations at Nuance Communications; and Sabina Joseph, general manager, Americas Technology Partners, at Amazon Web Services.

During the event, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio theCUBE, will broadcast insider interviews with Veeam’s Bill Largent, chief executive officer; Gil Vega, chief information security officer; David Harvey, vice president of strategic alliances, and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Modern data protection

In the second half of 2020, Veeam saw 17.9% year over year growth in revenue, triple its closest competitor, Allan told theCUBE. And the company’s sequential growth was over 21%.

“Massive growth, and all of that is in the second half of the year, $563 million in revenue. So over a billion-dollar company, and we see that continuing forward. It’s the right product, right time, with the right execution,” he said.

Veeam Backup & Replication provides backup, recovery and replication for critical workloads, including VMware, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Windows, Linux, NAS, enterprise apps and more. The product is a 4-in-1 backup and recovery solution for storage snapshots, backups, replicas and continuous data protection under a single platform.

In February this year, Veeam announced Backup & Replication v11, the newest version of the product. With more than 200 new features and enhancements, the single solution for comprehensive data management is powerful and flexible enough to protect each phase of the data life cycle while handling all the complexities of a multicloud environment for AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

With increasingly more enterprises keeping the better part of their employees effectively working  remotely, workloads are accelerating to multicloud ecosystems and data is harder to manage and control than ever before. The company stated that in response to the new data protection challenges customers faced in 2020 and in anticipation of those to come in 2021, the new v11 includes reliable security and ransomware protection that fends off increasing risks of cyberthreats and delivers resiliency for companies of any size.

Product innovation and simple, flexible, reliable approach pays off

In March 2020, private equity firm Insight Partners completed its acquisition of Veeam at a valuation of approximately $5 billion, setting the pace for a year of substantial growth and expanded success across market segments. Under its new ownership, Veeam moved its headquarters from Switzerland to the U.S. with an eye toward growing its U.S. enterprise market share. What followed was a year of significant market success during a pandemic — not to mention 13 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth.

Veeam is continuing on the right path with its avidly persistent product innovation and simple, flexible and reliable approach. Even with the unforeseen challenges and circumstances that began in early 2020, Veeam continued its rapid growth with its second consecutive year of bookings over $1 billion and a 22% year-over-year increase in annual recurring revenue.

“Customers face the very difficult task of cutting complexity and costs while at the same time meeting very demanding data protection requirements,” said Krista Macomber, senior analyst of data protection and multicloud data management at Evaluator Group. “The highlights of Veeam’s v11 hit a number of the most prominent requirements that we hear from customers, including meeting strict SLAs, mitigating downtime and data loss through disaster preparedness and ransomware protection, and meeting compliance requirements pertaining to data retention.”

2020 culminated with Veeam’s acquisition of Kasten to offer a secure system for Kubernetes backup. The integration of Kasten into its Cloud Data Management platform positions Veeam to meet the majority of data protection and recovery needs for multicloud environments. In April of this year, Veeam announced a new release of the Kasten K10 software platform with immutability features for defending Kubernetes environments against ransomware attacks.

Making data future-ready

Known for its high energy, exciting discussions, and many announcements, this year’s VeeamON conference is likely to be no different.

The event kicks off with an opening keynote featuring Bill Largent and Danny Allan, who will share Veeam’s vision for modern data protection and provide insights into new innovations that will help organizations drive business transformation.

Other topics of discussion in more than 30 sessions will include cyberthreats and ransomware protection, cloud acceleration, future trends in backup and recovery, the top drivers of a data protection strategy, post-COVID and multicloud data protection in 2021 and into 2022, innovation in a tumultuous world, Veeam’s 2021 channel strategy and opportunities, and more.
