Nvidia and MediaTek partner to advance in-car technology
Nvidia Corp. and Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek Inc. today signed a new partnership to “bring drivers and passengers new experiences inside the car.”
Announced at the COMPUTEX 2023 Expo in Taipei, the deal sees the two companies working together to bring advanced technology to automotive applications. MediaTek will develop automotive systems-on-chip that integrate Nvidia’s graphics processing unit chiplet, which includes Nvidia’s artificial intelligence and graphics intellectual property.
The chiplets will be connected via high-speed “coherent chiplet interconnect technology.” That involves designing and connecting multiple chiplets, or smaller chips, to work together as a single larger chip. The chips are coherent thanks to the chiplets’ ability to maintain a consistent and unified view of the memory, allowing them to work together seamlessly and efficiently, according to Nvidia.
In addition, MediaTek plans to use various Nvidia software technologies — DRIVE OS, DRIVE IX, CUDA and TensorRT — for the newly developed automotive SoCs. The integration is aimed at boosting in-cabin infotainment, safety and convenience features, paving the way for more sophisticated and intelligent in-vehicle experiences across all types of cars.
Through the integration of Nvidia’s GPU chipset into its automotive offerings, MediaTek is also said to be looking to augment the performance capabilities of its Dimensity Auto platform, creating a solution for advanced, connected in-cabin systems. The fusion of the two companies’ expertise is said to deliver new user experiences while riding a “historic wave of generative AI that’s transforming industries from advertising to manufacturing to telecom.”
Under the collaboration, MediaTek’s automotive customers will gain access to Nvidia RTX graphics and advanced AI capabilities, along with safety and security features enabled by Nvidia DRIVE software.
“AI and accelerated computing are fueling the transformation of the entire auto industry,” Nvidia founder and Chief Executive Jensen Huang said in a blog post. “The combination of MediaTek’s industry-leading system-on-chip plus Nvidia’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable new user experiences, enhanced safety and new connected services for all vehicle segments, from luxury to entry-level.”
The MediaTek partnership was not the only thing Nvidia talked about at Computex. The GPU maker also announced that its GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip is now in full production. Described as its most powerful AI chip yet, the GH200 has a total bandwidth of 900 gigabytes per second, seven times higher than the standard PCIe Gen5 lanes in today’s most advanced accelerated computing systems.
