When Docker Inc. introduced its new Docker Build Cloud service in January, the company made it clear that the offering would allow developers to save significant time in turning raw code files into a functioning application.

This acceleration of the build process by offloading computations from a developer’s machine to the cloud is already seeing results, according to Scott Johnston (pictured), chief executive officer at Docker Inc.

“What used to take an hour is now a minute and a half,” he said. “It is giving time back for developers. You put more horsepower behind the build. We cache it, and that speeds it up as well.”

Johnston spoke during an exclusive interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, with theCUBE Research analyst Rob Strechay and his co-host Savannah Peterson as part of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe. They discussed Docker’s recent announcements and its focus on AI. (* Disclosure below.)

Docker extends Red Hat alliance

In addition to putting a turbo charge in the developer build process, Docker announced an extension this week of its alliance with Red Hat Inc. to access Testcontainers Cloud from the OpenShift platform. The open-source Testcontainers project is used by developers to test software components ahead of release.

“You can now burst your tests out to the cloud,” Johnston explained. “The developer doesn’t have to touch a thing; they just flip a switch. It makes it super easy.”

Streamlining developer workloads has gained new importance over the past year with the growing adoption of AI-based applications in the enterprise. In October, Docker unveiled a fully containerized GenAI Stack to facilitate AI application development in minutes. Docker built the offering through partnerships with Neo4J Inc., LangChain Inc. and the open-source project Ollama.

“We’ve seen the project just take off on GitHub,” Johnston said. “Automate and help the developer make smart decisions early in the flow state. There’s a huge opportunity for generative AI, and Docker has a role to play.”
