Infinidat's Eric Herzog talks about how the company's InfiniSafe Cyber Detection offers innovate software for protecting customer storage. SECURITY

Infinidat fights cyberattacks with security-rich, high-end storage

With cyberattacks growing in frequency and sophistication, organizations must rethink their approach to data security, ensuring every layer of their infrastructure is fortified.

Infinidat Ltd., one of the finalists for theCUBE Technology Innovation Awards, is combating the increasing rates of cyberattacks with its InfiniSafe Cyber Detection technology. The company takes pride in offering high-end, low-cost storage solutions. Now, Infinidat has embedded cyber protection into customers’ storage and is eager to show it’s got the goods on security, according to Eric Herzog (pictured), chief marketing officer of Infinidat.

“We demoed live in the middle of September on a global webinar recovery of two and a half petabytes of primary data storage,” Herzog said. “We guaranteed and did recovery of those two and a half petabytes in four seconds … you need to have cybersecurity on primary storage and on backup storage. We did it on the backup side, a 25-and-one-half petabyte Veeam [Software] backup repository.”

Herzog spoke with theCUBE Research’s Christophe Bertrand at the Cyber Resiliency Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed InfiniSafe Cyber Detection technology and how Infinidat is securing customers’ storage and artificial intelligence-based protection. (* Disclosure below.)

How InfiniSafe Cyber Detection prevents repeat attacks

As cyberattacks continue to rise, a cybersecurity strategy that includes storage is a must, according to Herzog. However, customers need to ensure that when they recover data, they are not recovering the ransomware with it.

“[It’s not] a question of when you’ll be attacked, it’s how often you’re going to be attacked,” Herzog said. “The reality is you need to scan if you need to do recovery, [and] you need to make sure that you’re not recovering malware. It’s not like they’re King Kong or Godzilla screaming and yelling at the top of their lungs, ‘Hey, I’m going to steal your stuff or destroy your stuff.’ It’s all done surreptitiously.”

Infinidat’s security software has three components: the base InfiniSafe technology; InfiniSafe Automated Cyber Protection, which integrates with widely used cybersecurity technologies, such as Microsoft Sentinel and IBM QRadar; and InfiniSafe Cyber Detection, which has two use cases: scanning file systems and taking snapshots for malware.

“We configure an immutable snapshot,” Herzog said. “We create a fenced forensic environment. Now, they’ve had an attack, and you want to take candidates to determine what is the known good copy. Then you can use our InfiniSafe Cyber Detection to scan that to see if there’s a malware or ransomware. What we do uniquely is we guarantee the recovery time objective.”

Herzog compares a cybersecurity attack to a natural disaster, such as a fire or flood, and emphasizes that it should be treated as such. Infinidat has also integrated artificial intelligence into its detection technology to help identify new threats, and it offers most of its additional security features for free.

“If you’re not including storage in your comprehensive cybersecurity strategy, that is a huge miss,” Herzog said. “And again … the only thing that we charge for at all is the scanning, the software InfiniSafe. Other than [that], the scanning is embedded in every array they buy or our InfiniGuard purpose-built backup appliance.”
