Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor, whose app runs several coding agents at once

Meta Platforms Inc. has acquired artificial intelligence coding startup Conductor in a deal first reported today by Axios.

Conductor confirmed it’s joining Meta in a post on its website. Terms were not disclosed.

Conductor’s software lets a developer run several coding agents at once, each in an isolated copy of the codebase, and then review and merge what they produce. Supported agents include Anthropic PBC’s Claude Code, OpenAI Group PBC’s Codex and Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s Cursor, and users pay for them through their own subscriptions and keys. The desktop app runs on Macs. A hosted version, Conductor Cloud, puts agents in sandboxed virtual machines where they can keep working for hours, and users can check on them from an iPhone app.

Engineers at Meta were using Conductor well before the deal. When the startup announced its Series A in March, it named Meta, Google LLC and Spotify Technology SA among the companies with dozens of engineers on the product. Conductor now says on its website that more than 100,000 people use it.

People familiar with the deal told Axios that Meta expects the Conductor team’s speed at shipping products to help it build its next generation of AI coding tools. The acquisition follows two Meta model releases last month that both pitched coding as a strength. On Oct. 15, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weights version of its Muse Spark model aimed at coding and long-running agent work. Meta’s more capable Muse Wonder models stay closed inside its own Muse Code terminal and application programming interface.

The Conductor deal landed the same day OpenAI said it plans to acquire developer tools startup Pierre Computer. OpenAI had already announced plans in June to buy Ona, which runs coding agents in cloud sandboxes.

Conductor’s own products are closing in stages, starting with a halt today to new sign-ups and downloads. Pro subscribers now get their paid features free. The cloud service goes read-only on Nov. 13 and shuts on Nov. 20, after which the company will start deleting the data users stored there. Before that date, users can export their data or move cloud workspaces onto their own machines, and active subscribers will get refunds.

Local copies of the Mac app keep working until early 2027, when the team expects to release a new interface it has not yet described. New models and critical bug fixes stop arriving at that point, and Conductor will delete the app’s user data. The company said it has never sold Conductor user data or trained models on it, and does not plan to.

Chief Executive Charlie Holtz and Chief Technology Officer Jackson de Campos founded the company, formally Melty Inc., in 2024. Conductor raised a $22 million Series A in March from Spark Capital and Matrix. Y Combinator and the founders of Notion and Linear are also backers.
