Intel and EMC join forces to promote diversity | #emcworld

Bev Crair and Andrea Nelson came to the table to join theCUBE’s Jeff Frick at EMC World 2015 to talk about diversity. Bev Crair is the Data Center Group VP at Intel Corp., and Andrea Nelson is the director of Product Marketing at Intel.

The conversation started with a discussion of the EMC Women of the World program. This program is dedicated to providing a place for the women at EMC to meet, network and hear speakers on a variety of topics. Crair herself was speaking on behalf of Intel as part of a panel concerning the science behind bias and diversity.

The benefits of diversity

Crair explained that data shows diverse organizations make better decisions. Boards that are diverse see a significant improvement in ROI. Because of this, Intel has made a commitment to improve diversity at all levels by 2020. Additionally, they promote programs that encourage diversity.

Changes in the industry

The role of diversity and how diverse teams affect products has changed in the past 30 years. Crair mentioned that, at first, moving forward on diversity was an open question. Now, it’s about leaders reaching out to leverage the skills and unique experiences of diverse team members. Because women make up a major part of the electronics market, looking to their needs is vital to making better products.

As for Intel and EMC, Nelson pointed out that the two companies have a partnership going back about 20 years. Working together to promote diversity is simply an extension of that partnership. “This is a natural evolution as we try and move the industry forward,” she said.
