SAP launches cloud-based IoT systems for manufacturers

Enterprise software giant SAP SE is targeting manufacturers with a new suite of products aimed at helping them manage and monitor their systems and make them work better with other parts of the supply chain.

The new offerings, part of SAP’s Digital Manufacturing Cloud, include the “SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud solution for execution,” which integrates with existing manufacturing systems on the shop floor to provide visibility into operations at the component and material level.

Then there’s the “SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud for insights,” which provides data-driven performance management capabilities. SAP also announced a new “Predictive Quality” offering, which enables predictive algorithms to be applied so manufacturers can reduce the amount of defects in their products.

Not least, the company introduced a new cloud-based collaborative platform that comes integrated with its SAP Ariba offering to connect customers to manufacturers. So, for example, a supplier of 3-D printers might be able to collaborate with its customers throughout the entire manufacturing cycle.

SAP said manufacturers can use its new systems to work together on product design, link design data and discussions to requests for a quote, and then obtain quotes on the costs of parts from multiple suppliers and initiate the buying process.

“Our manufacturing cloud solutions help customers take advantage of the industrial internet of things by connecting equipment, people and operations across the extended digital supply chain and tightly integrating manufacturing with business operations,” said Bernd Leukert, SAP’s executive board member for products and innovation.

In a raft of other announcements, SAP also launched a new Connected Worker Safety service, which relies on data from wearable devices to ensure worker safety. The service analyzes data from workers in the field including things such as the employee’s heart rate and body temperature as well as other variables including the room temperature, air quality, amount of light and noise. The service can then help to raise the alarm should a worker sustain any injury or suffer from fatigue or dehydration.

SAP said the Connected Worker Safety service will be released this quarter. The SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud is available now.
