AI
Money, and desperation, sure can pave over a lot of ill will. This week’s example: Anthropic signed a mammoth deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to use all of the computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus data center full of AI chips.
Yes, that Elon Musk, the one who until this week liked to call Anthropic Misanthropic, its Claude model racist and, oh, its logo looks like an anal sphincter. But as much as Anthropic is desperate for more infrastructure for its ridiculous growth, so too is Musk for some income from a massive data center that his own xAI model Grok apparently doesn’t need — because, well, not enough people are using it — so he can take SpaceX public without quite such a big cash burn that might scare off investors. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this marriage of convenience on the rocks at some point.
Anthropic and now OpenAI are doubling down on selling to enterprises, as both this week did joint-venture deals with a raft of private equity firms to create new AI services companies.
They won’t be alone, though, because the empires are striking back: IBM used its annual Think conference to make the case that it has the ingredients to get AI, and agents, past prototypes into widespread use. Meantime, ServiceNow is pitching itself as the control tower for enterprise AI.
Amazon said it will start selling logistics services, in what sounds like a similar gambit to its hugely successful cloud. But Penske Logistics also announced similar services the same day, so it won’t have the field to itself this time.
Despite worries that AI will result in a SaaSpocalypse for software-as-a-service companies, there were some winners this week on the earnings front, including the likes of Datadog and Palantir. Advanced Micro Devices also had a big quarter too. But AI isn’t floating everyone’s boat, as Cloudflare, CoreWeave, Arm and Kyndryl disappointed.
Cerebras has plans for its IPO as big as the AI chips it sells, aiming to raise $3.5 billion at a $27 billion valuation — not least because it’s actually profitable.
There’s another glut of events next week, including Red Hat Summit, Boomi World, SAP Sapphire, VeeamON and SaaStr AI. And a few more bellwether earnings reports will be coming from Cisco, Applied Materials and others.
