Nexus 4 Sells Out in 15 Minutes. Could the iPhone 5S Beat That?

In today’s mobile new roundup: iPhone 5s already in the works; Nexus devices are a hit in the UK; and Good Technology teams up with BoxTone.

iPhone 5s already in the works

Just bought the iPhone 5? How would you feel if I told you that Apple is already working on the iPhone 5S, set to be released during the first quarter of next year?  You’d say that the rumor is absurd and that Apple doesn’t release phones in the first half of the year, but Apple seems to be full of surprises these days.  Remember the iPad mini?  It launched way off Apple’s schedule of product releases.

Though the source, Digitimes, is a bit questionable, you can’t deny that Apple may need to release a revamped version of the iPhone 5 to address standing issues like poor mapping software.  They did something with the iPhone 4S, so a 5S wouldn’t be difficult to imagine.  No news yet as to what features the 5S could have, only that early stages of production would begin in December in order to meet a first quarter launch.

Nexus devices a hit in the UK

According to sources, after the Nexus 4 went on sale in Google Play’s UK store, the 8GB version of the device sold out in just 15 minutes.  Aside from the Nexus 4, the revamped Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 also went on sale and it looks the UK consumers are quite excited to get their hands on the Google devices.  Unfortunately, Google seems to have underestimated the demand for their products, as consumers started complaining on Twitter that they encountered a lot of problems when placing an order.  Some say that by the time they worked out the problems they encountered on Google Play, the item they wanted to purchase was already out of stock.

According to CNET, the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4 are already out of stock, and it’s the same story with the 32GB Nexus 10.  Instead of a purchase button, the devices have a “Notify Me” button.  The Nexus 7 seems to be overshadowed as the 16GB and 32GB Wi+Fi, 32GB + HSPA+ versions are still available and will be shipped within 3-5 days upon purchase.  The 16GB Nexus 10 is also still available.

Good Technology and BoxTone enter partnership

To deliver the industry’s only complete Enterprise Mobility Management solution, Good Technology and BoxTone entered a strategic partnership.  The partnership will also allows them to innovate new critical mobile device and application management capabilities to meet the rapidly-evolving needs of IT and lines of business leaders.

“Mobile enterprise environments are increasingly complex with a diverse mix of BYO and company-owned smartphones and tablets, multiple mobile OS platforms, and more business and productivity apps than ever before.  Companies looking to harness the full power of mobility to boost employee productivity, increase competitiveness, and better serve their customers need a secure, reliable, and easy to use platform to manage the entire mobile lifecycle – across all users, apps and devices,” said John Herrema, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Good Technology.

“We’re excited to work with BoxTone to provide the enterprise marketplace with comprehensive service management, sophisticated analytics, and unified reporting so they can enhance the health, ROI, and compliance of their mobility deployments.”

IT professionals are now beginning to see that standalone mobile device management does not meet their needs for a fully-mobilized enterprise.  MDM vendors are now scrambling to deliver new mobile app security, containerization and even service management features, which coincidentally are the core capabilities that Good and BoxTone have contributed to industry standards for years.
